The Role of Occupational Therapy for People with IDD

the-role-of-occupational-therapy-for-people-with-idd

Occupational therapy is an educational and practice-oriented health profession that focuses primarily on rehabilitation. An occupational therapist is trained to assist patients in doing daily activities safely and effectively while encouraging confidence, independence, and happiness. Our TxHmL Program offers occupational therapy to our clients. Occupational therapists are frequently employed to help with the following:

  • Recovery from surgery, injury, or stroke
  • Pain management
  • Memory disorders, such as Alzheimer’s or dementia, and Neurological conditions, including MS or cerebral palsy
  • Joint disease and Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Mental health disorders and Intellectual/developmental disabilities

According to the American Occupational Therapy Association, Individuals with IDD have restricted cognitive capacities and adaptive behaviors that limit their involvement in daily tasks.

As a result, those with IDD participate in fewer community activities, have fewer social contacts, and engage in lesser leisure and employment activities than those without IDD. Yet that doesn’t make them less willing or deserving of these things. Occupational therapists can help with this. As rehabilitative professionals providing behavioral supports in Texas, it is their responsibility to aid and supervise community integration through various age/ability-appropriate and interest-targeted activities. For a child, this could entail an emphasis on school, home, and recreation, whereas, for an adult, it could mean aid with employment, home management, leisure, and social activities.

However, Professional OTs are only one component of the equation: making communities more friendly to those with IDD requires a broad commitment to diversity, nondiscrimination, and accessibility for everyone.
